Foothill Country Dancers promotes New England-style contra dancing in the northern Sierra Nevada foothills. Contra dancing is non-commercial, do-it-yourself, socially inclusive, community-building, participatory, musically driven recreation. No experience is necessary--all dances are taught and prompted, and no partner is required. The music is always live.

FCD sponsors the annual 12-hour sprung-floor dance festival Fall Has Sprung, and two regular monthly dances:

Waltz Workshop

Saturday, February 20, 5 - 6:45 pm

Auburn Masonic Temple, 956 1/2 Lincoln Way

Susan Petrick leads another of her fabulous waltz workshops before the Auburn contra dance on February 20. She'll cover waltz basics (for review and for less-experienced dancers) from 5 to 5:45 pm, teach a variety of intermediate-level variations from 6 to 6:45, and then offer individual coaching until about 7 pm. Learning the waltz variations will open up vast new possibilities for waltzing pleasure (and impress your partners, too). Workshop admission is $8; if you pay for the evening contra dance at the same time it's only $7.

Balance & Swing Workshop

Saturday, May 15, 5 - 6:45 pm

Auburn Masonic Temple, 956 1/2 Lincoln Way

Rich Albanese teaches on workshop on everything you always wanted to know about balancing and swinging, the core of the contra dance experience. In addition to getting tips on improving your swing style, you'll learn all sorts of flourishes and twirls to add to your repertoire.
