Contra Dancing
in the northern Sierra Nevada foothills

About Foothill Country Dancers

Foothill Country Dancers (FCD) is a small, volunteer-run non-profit organization dedicated to promoting contra dancing in the foothills zone of Nevada and Placer counties. FCD is a membership organization (see below), but we consider all those who attend our dances to be members of our dance community. FCD was organized in the early 1990s and since that time has produced at least 21 Saturday-evening dances per year. From 1998 through 2013, FCD also produced an annual 12-hour contra dance event known as Fall Has Sprung that each year attracted as many as 250 dancers from all over California and other nearby states. FCD is an affiliate of the Country Dance and Song Society, and it is through this relationship that we maintain our tax-exempt status.

Governance

A board of directors manages the affairs of the organization, making decisions about scheduling, managing finances, establishing policy, authorizing non-routine expenditures, and handling various issues as they come up. A set of formal by-laws establishes the framework within which the board operates. Current board members are listed in the box to the left. If you are interested in joining the board of directors, please communicate your interest to one of the board members, or send us an email.

Membership

All regular and semi-regular attendees at our dances are encouraged to be members of Foothill Country Dancers. Membership is by the calendar year and the fee is a modest $15. Members of FCD are entitled to a $1 discount on admission to any regular FCD dance (since we hold between 22 and 24 dances per year, the potential savings is $22 to $24, which can more than compensate for the membership fee). Membership fees help us pay for our liability insurance, website hosting, photocopying, and other costs; they are an important source of funds for FCD because most of the money collected at the door for any particular dance goes to pay rent for the hall and to compensate the musicians and sound technician. You can fill out a membership form at any dance and pay your $15 fee in person, or download the membership form from our website, print it out, and send it by mail with a check to the address on the form.
